The honest answer to "how much does an app cost" is that it depends on scope — but that answer is useless if you are trying to get board approval next month. So here are real 2026 numbers for the Australian market, what sits inside each band, and where budgets actually break.

All figures are in AUD and exclude GST. They assume an Australian-based team or a hybrid team with an Australian technical lead, which is what most businesses here end up buying once they have tried the alternative.


The four scope tiers

Tier 1 — Validation build: $25,000 – $60,000

A single-platform app (or a Flutter build shipped to both stores) with one core workflow, email or social sign-in, a hosted backend on Firebase or Supabase, and one release to the store.

What you get: one user type, five to eight screens, no admin panel beyond a database console, no offline mode, no integrations beyond authentication and analytics.

What this tier is for: proving that people will use the thing before you spend real money. It is not a business system, and treating it like one is the single most common way this budget gets wasted.

Tier 2 — Production business app: $60,000 – $140,000

Two user types, ten to twenty screens, a real backend with role-based permissions, a web admin dashboard, push notifications, payment or accounting integration, and a proper release pipeline with crash monitoring.

This is where most Australian SMEs land. A field-service app, a booking product, an internal operations tool, a customer portal with a mobile companion.

Tier 3 — Platform build: $140,000 – $350,000

Multiple connected surfaces — web app, iOS, Android, maybe a customer-facing portal — sharing one backend. Offline-first sync, complex permissions, third-party integrations that go both ways, and compliance requirements.

Tier 4 — Enterprise / regulated: $350,000+

On-premise or private-cloud deployment, formal security review, audit logging, SSO against a corporate identity provider, and a procurement process that adds months before a line of code is written.


What actually drives the number

Scope tiers are a starting point. Five things move a quote more than anything else:

1. Number of distinct user types. Every additional role multiplies screens, permissions, test cases and edge cases. Going from one user type to three rarely triples the cost, but it commonly adds 40–60%.

2. Integrations, and which direction they run. Reading data from an external system is cheap. Writing back to it, handling their rate limits, reconciling conflicts and dealing with their outages is not. A two-way Xero or ERP sync is a feature in its own right, not a checkbox.

3. Offline behaviour. "It should work without signal" is one sentence in a brief and weeks of engineering. Conflict resolution, queued writes and sync state are genuinely hard. If your users are on rural sites or in basements, budget for it explicitly.

4. Design maturity. A build from a proper design system with defined states costs meaningfully less than one where designs arrive screen by screen and change mid-sprint.

5. Native vs cross-platform. Flutter or React Native typically saves 30–40% against two separate native builds — but not if your app leans hard on platform-specific capability. See our native vs cross-platform comparison for where the line falls.


The line items people forget

These are not optional extras. They are part of shipping software, and leaving them out of a budget is how a project runs over.

Fixed price or time and materials?

Fixed price works when scope is genuinely locked — a defined replacement for an existing system, or a well-specified integration. You pay a risk premium, usually 15–25%, for the certainty.

Time and materials works when you expect to learn things during the build, which is most new products. It is cheaper if you have the discipline to make decisions quickly, and more expensive if you do not.

The hybrid most people should use: fixed price on a discovery phase that produces a specification, clickable prototype and technical architecture, then a fixed-price build quoted against that specification. Discovery typically runs $8,000–$20,000 and consistently pays for itself by removing the guesswork from the build quote.
